australian custard apple
today, i finally managed to get hold of an australian custard apple at a fruit shop in clayton. my friend nah, who visited melbourne a few years ago, paints this picture of the melbourne streets, in autumn, filled with stalls selling custard apples. according to him, they are so plentiful and so cheap, costing about one-tenth of the price in singapore.
i have been telling him that with my so many visits to melbourne, i have yet to see a custard apple, much less rows of stalls selling them in the city. this shop in clayton did not have many but it was selling them for aus$5.59 a kilo.
he might have gone to some orchards where they grow this heart-shaped fruit. when i do go to the dandies for high-tea, where there are a few orchards, i may go and look for one that sells custard apples or when i go to wartina south to visit my friend, i can stop at the fruit farm along the way.
the lady from whom i bought the custard apple told me to wait for about two days, when the fruit has soften, to eat the fruit. after that i will decide if it's worth buying a box to take back to singapore.
