brighton in melbourne

when we did a self-drive tour of england and wales nearly 15 years ago, brighton was our first stop. we had lunch at one of the italian cafes and after lunch, we visited the royal pavilion and the brighton (palace) pier. brighton is a popular city on the south coast of england. when i told my colleague that i had visited brighton in uk, she laughed and said: why go to a place full of old people?

today, i took the train to south yarra and from there transferred to the sandringham line to get to brighton, at least to brighton beach. there are three stations with the name brighton in it on this line: brighton north, brighton middle and brighton beach. the beach is just a short walk from the train station.

there is neither an amusement park nor an imposing pier but there are beautiful 'bathing boxes' in brighton. these 'boxes' are actually private changing rooms and stores for beach accessories and they are without amenities - no water and no electricity. yet, they can fetch a lot of money because these sheds have become a historic and cultural icon.

the fine sand and clear, clean water should make this an attractive place for swimmers and picnickers but i did not see any of them on a weekday. i expect this place to be crowded on weekends. from the beach, there is a magnificent view of the city skyline.
