the high flying black-naped oriole

my friend's wife commented the other day that the population of orioles in singapore has been increasing over the years. i did a check on a website and found that she was right. the black-naped oriole is one of the ten most abundant resident birds found in singapore.

this beautiful golden yellow bird seems to have adjusted well to our urban environment. you not only find them in the nature parks, you can hear their flutey whistles even in housing estates and in city areas. there is this lone one in our estate, always perched high on a tall tree or on the ledge of a block, and it will make his presence known/heard as early as six in the morning.

black-naped orioles rarely descend to the ground. they forage high in trees. they usually forage alone or in pairs. they are most active in the morning and evening.

this morning, while i was at sungei buloh wetland reserve, i kept hearing the shrill calls of the orioles all the way from the main bridge right up to the fresh-water pond.

the black-naped oriole can easily be distinguished by the black band across the eyes.
