melbourne & singapore's trains

there are a number of differences between the trains in melbourne and in singapore. first, the fare is integrated, that means, the fare you pay for the bus ride allows you to continue on the train ride, as long as it is within the same zone.

an announcement is made at the station prior to the train reaching it. the train doors do not open automatically. i am so used to the doors opening by themselves that i have been caught twice, standing at the doors and waiting for the doors to slide open. you have to press a big button at the middle or pull at the door handle. when it comes to closing, it is automatic.

eating and drinking are allowed on the train. however, drinking of alcohol is prohibited. drink may be spilled and bits of potato chips left on the seat but they do not seem to bother the passengers. commuters seem to be in the habit of leaving the newspapers behind on the train.

you can carry your bicycle onto the train. there is provision on the train to accommodate the bicycle. this is usually found at the end, in the last carriage of the train.

even small animals and dogs are allowed on the train. these pet animals must be in some carriers and dogs must be muzzled.

on some lines, they waive the fare during the early hours of the morning as a move to reduce congestion during peak hours. anyway, even during peak hours, the trains are not as crowded as ours.
