box hill, multicultural suburb

cannot really say i went to explore the box hill suburb today because all i did was take bus 733 from monash bus loop to box hill central, browsed around the market and shops and then took the city train to richmond where i transferred to the pakenham line so that i could get off at clayton. it was partly because i wanted to take advantage of the two-hour unlimited travel using the metcard.

today was the first time i encountered two ticket inspectors boarding the train to verify with passengers that they had valid train tickets. one passenger was advised and another had his name and address taken down by the inspectors. unlike singapore, they do not have turnstiles at every station which means you can board and alight from a train without a ticket at such stations.

box hill, like springvale, glen waverley and richmond, is the place ivy and her friend go to when they crave for chinese food. there is quite a large chinese and vietnamese community in box hill. during one of my previous visits to melbourne, we had chinese dinner at the hills bbq noodle shop with chris and del.

i have been looking for the custard apples again because yesterday when i went to the same fruit shop in clayton, there was no more custard apples. was also looking for old cucumber to cook soup. left the market empty handed.

some singaporeans still think that in australia all shops close at 5.00 p.m. except on days when they have late night shopping. the true picture is that there are places that are open way past midnight for night owls like those from singapore. sometimes when i called my younger daughter at close to midnight (melbourne time), she would tell me that she was having supper with friends.
